Six decades of Patrol heritage in Australia

For more than six decades, the Nissan Patrol has been a fixture of Australian motoring — first arriving in 1961 as the second-generation G60 Datsun Patrol and going on to become one of the longest-running continuous nameplates in the automotive industry. Across five generations sold locally, more than 258,000 Patrols have been delivered to Australian customers, building one of the most loyal enthusiast followings of any 4WD nameplate in the country.

The Patrol Evolution

G60 Datsun Patrol (1961–1980)

The nameplate's Australian beginning. In September 1962, just one year after arriving locally, a G60 became the first motor vehicle to cross the Simpson Desert when the Sprigg family charted what is now the French Line.

160-Series MQ Patrol (1980–1987)

The Patrol's evolution into a more recreational 4WD, helping establish it as a practical family and touring wagon while broadening customer appeal through the introduction of the first Patrol automatic transmission and, from 1984, the first turbo-diesel option.

Y60 GQ Patrol (1987–1997)

A genuine benchmark-setter. The GQ introduced all-coil-spring suspension to the segment, claiming the first of the Patrol's four 4x4 Australia 4x4 Of The Year titles in 1987.

Y61 GU Patrol (1997–2016)

The most popular Patrol ever sold in Australia. Between 1998 and 2000, Nissan delivered more than 10,000 GU Patrols annually locally, and Australia briefly became the world’s largest market for the model.

Y62 Patrol and Y62 Patrol Warrior (2013–present)

The pinnacle of the V8 era. The Y62 took the Patrol into a new chapter of refinement and on-road capability, while the Australian-engineered Patrol Warrior by Premcar dialled up its off-road credentials for local conditions. Together, they represent the closing chapter on more than a decade of Patrol V8 power.
