The New Car
Say hello to the new car. The Nissan LEAF. The first mass-produced, pupose built electric car for everyone, for everyday driving.
The New Motor
Powering the Nissan LEAF.
When you pop the hood on a Nissan LEAF, you may notice a few things are missing. For instance, there's no starter, no alternator or sparkplugs, in fact there's no engine in the traditional sense. That's because there's no petrol. Nissan LEAF runs on electricity, and though that's been around for a long time, we like to think of it as the new fuel.
To use the new fuel to run a car, you need a piece of technology called an inverter. It works a bit like a fuel pump in a traditional engine by getting fuel to the motor, but in this case, the fuel isn't petrol; it's electricity, stored in Nissan LEAF's battery.
And just as you control the flow of petrol in a traditional car, you control the flow of electricity in the Nissan LEAF with a pedal. Press down, it increases, and you speed up. Let up on the pedal, it decreases, and you slow down.
It's a simple principle. Simple and familiar.
And the way we see it, simple and familiar is a great way to think about the new fuel, and the new car as well.
The New Brakes
Every time you coast or apply the brakes in the Nissan LEAF, the electric motor acts as an electric generator, converting energy that would otherwise be wasted into battery energy. so even when you're slowing down, you're charging up.
The Nissan LEAF also hosts 4-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), brake assist and an electronic parking brake.
The New Gear Shift
No surprise that even the "gear shift" is unique. It works like a pivot ball, or computer mouse, in the palm of your hand. Effortlessly switch it to Eco mode, for the most efficient energy use from your charge.
Range Management Tools
To get the most out of every charge, try:
Multi Function Drive Computer
Regenerative braking – Every time you coast or apply the brakes in the Nissan LEAF, the electric motor acts as an electric generator, converting energy that would otherwise be wasted into battery energy. So even when you're slowing down, you're charging up.
Eco mode – This driver selectable mode reduces air conditioning, increases regenerative braking, and could increase your range by up to 10%.
Power meter – Indicates the regeneration power level provided to the Li-ion battery system and the energy (power) consumption level when driving.
Eco-indicator – The meter displays an illustrated ECO driving level calculated from conditions such as accelerator pedal and brake pedal operations, air conditioner usage and idling time of the electric motor.
Lithium ion battery empty warning light – When your battery has 4kWh remaining, your empty warning light will come on. A notification on your screen will indicate where to find all charging stations within range.
Power limitation mode – In the event that your battery becomes critically low, power limitation mode will automatically minimize your energy consumption and reduce your speed to help you get to a charging dock.
Charging
The New Car has a New Fuel, and there are many options for you to obtain the new fuel.
Gone are the days of lining up and pulling into a petrol station. With the Nissan LEAF, all you have to do is pull into your garage at home or work, lift the flap at the front of the vehicle and plug it in – it is that easy.
The Nissan LEAF has a charging timer to help ensure that it will draw power at night during off-peak periods, making the Nissan LEAF even cheaper to “fill”.
There are three types of charger that the Nissan LEAF will accept:
The most common will be a “Level 2” 15 Amp charger. This is a wall mounted unit that will charge the Nissan LEAF from empty to 100% in approximately 8 hours. Your Nissan Dealer will discuss this option with you when you order your Nissan LEAF.
The Nissan LEAF is also provided with a “Level 1” portable cable, which is located in the boot of the vehicle. All you have to do is find a 15 Amp power socket and plug the vehicle in.
The third type is a ”Level 3” fast charger, which will take just 30 minutes to charge the Nissan LEAF to 80% charge. This is a great option when you are out and about and are looking for extra range.
Smart Phone Integration
The Nissan LEAF app is designed to help you manage your vehicle and control many frequently used features directly from your smart phone.

The New Car
Say hello to the new car. The Nissan LEAF. The first mass-produced, pupose built electric car for everyone, for everyday driving.
5 Star ANCAP Rating
Dual front airbags, side airbags and head-protecting side curtains are standard equipment. Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist and electronic stability control (ESC) are also standard. Intelligent seat belt reminders are fitted to both front seats.
Pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts to reduce slack in the event of a crash. A three point seat belt is fitted to the centre rear seat. This provides better protection than a two point (lap) seat belt.
All of this giving the Nissan LEAF a 5 star ANCAP rating.
Airbags
Front, rear and curtain airbags provide protection for passengers from the front to the rear of the vehicle.
Vehicle Dynamic Control
Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), also known as Electronic Stability Program, is an advanced standard safety feature, which helps you remain in control of your vehicle during critical situations to avoid serious accidents. The VDC system achieves this by comparing the actions of the driver with the momentary vehicle behaviour and controls the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Traction Control Systems (TCS) accordingly, to initiate the appropriate corrective action by selectively braking individual wheels and controlling engine power. This stabilises the vehicle and keeps it on its intended path.
Anti-lock Braking
The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) helps you retain directional control whilst braking. It optimises braking performance by sensing wheel lock and sending a signal to the braking system to release the locked wheel. As the wheel unlocks, it can be steered. The system individually applies and releases the brakes to help provide optimum stopping and control under extreme braking situations.
Brake Assist
In emergency braking situations, Brake Assist (BA) generates extra pressure on the braking system. Brake Assist and ABS work together to give optimum control by preventing wheel lockage when braking.
Brakeforce Distribution
Senses the load condition of both passengers and luggage to optimise rear brakeforce and control front and rear brake distribution. This enables safer driving, whether on your own or while carrying a full load of passengers or cargo.
Pretension Seatbelts
The front seatbelts include a pretensioner and load limiter. The pretensioner uses sensors to determine the severity of a potential crash and instantly tightens accordingly. Should additional force be exerted on the seatbelt, the load limiter ensures appropriate give so as to reduce any damaging pressure on the torso of front seat occupants.
ALR/ELR Seatbelt System
3-point seatbelts for all seating postions. ALR/ELR seatbelt system for all passenger seating positions (ELR for driver's seat).
Child Safety
Three child seat anchorage points add greater seating flexibility, depending on your particular needs. Child safety rear door locks also prevent children from accidentally opening the rear doors.
Headrests
Front-seat height-adjustable head restraints and rear-seat height adjustable headrests.
The Nissan LEAF is packed with features. On the exterior you have zero tailpipe, but aerodynamic headlights, solar panel rear spoiler, fog lights and can choose from one of the five great colours, with the blue Nissan badge, specific to the Nissan LEAF. Inside you have a fully integrated audio, rearview monitor and Nissan Navigation System, with a computer enabling you to charge, heat and cool the car on demand from the dash or your smart phone. Hands-free phone system, cruise control and automatic features allow you to concentrate on driving the Nissan LEAF. The new car is here, and with so much to learn, head to our Nissan LEAF Australia YouTube Channel or our digital brochure for the full details.
