ALLAN WHITING tackles a Vic High Country track that travels through spectacular gold-mining country. Steeped in goldmining history, this area offers exciting driving for soft-roader vehicles as well as dual-range 4X4s. Tracks lead to historical European and Aboriginal sites of interest for the modern-day explorer. The first section of this trek, along Howqua Track as far as Sheepyard Flat, is fine for soft-roaders. From Fry's Hut to Wren's Flat, however, the track is very steep and loose in places and calls for vehicles with low-range gearing and plenty of ground clearance. |

ALLAN WHITING discovers a national park that contains off-road touring and, for the modern explorer, rugged bushwalking options. If you want a destination with off-roading, bushwalking and shady, well-serviced camping then head to Girraween National Park in south-east Queensland. Girraween NP is just above the Queensland/NSW border, in a mountainous, rocky region about 900 metres above sea level. The surface rock is mostly granite that formed as lava flows cooled between 200 million and 400 million years ago. |

To escape from it all, ALLAN WHITING reckons Bournda National Park, on the NSW far south coast, is the place to go. Pristine coastline as well as ample opportunities to ski, sail, surf and bushwalk make this a great trek along the far south coast of New South Wales. Bournda National Park is about 440km south of Sydney, 245km south-east of Canberra and 640km north-east of Melbourne. It can be reached via Sapphire Coast Drive from Tathra in the north and Merimbula in the south. |

RON AND VIV MOON head to northern Tasmania and find plenty to do above - and below - the ground. High above the Mersey River, in northern Tasmania, the Borradaile Plains are a world away from the countryside below. Often covered in snow during winter, this high country offers spectacular views of the rugged ridges of the Great Western Tiers and the surrounding landscape. |
