The Re-enactment of the first Simpson Desert Crossing in a vehicle

50 years ago Nissan didn’t just make tracks in the sand, they made history.

In 1962, an intrepid geologist and his family became the first people to cross the Simpson Desert in a motor vehicle. That geologist was Reg Sprigg, the vehicle was the G60 Nissan Patrol.

In 2012, Reg Sprigg’s children, Pat Callinan and a throng of 4x4 enthusiasts made the pilgrimage across the Simpson Desert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of man’s greatest achievements behind the wheel of a Nissan Patrol.
